Prologue

It was almost a disappointment when he stuck the needle in her thigh. She didn’t scream, didn’t cry, and didn’t plead. Her eyes opened wide and her mouth formed a circle as if to say, “Oh.”

But there was no sound at all. The chocolate-brown eyes narrowed and closed. He watched the pulse on her neck. Slow. Slower. He’d given too much, too soon.

He rolled off the semi-comatose girl to make notes, not wanting to make this mistake again.

She groaned. He turned and ran his fingers through her mahogany hair, then tapped the tip of her nose with his finger. He kissed the smatter of freckles across her cheekbones, and trailed his thumb across her lips. No response.

The syringe lay empty on the bed beside her. He picked it up carefully and replaced the plastic case over the needle’s lethal point. Retrieving a small vial from the floor, he grinned and ran his thumb across the warning. For Veterinary use only.

He checked the pulse of his latest victim.

Nothing.
